2/7/12 Response

Response for pages 50-75.

As I have grown to know her in my readings thus far of Behind the Beautiful Forevers, I deduce that Manju can be described as a scholar, virtuous, and dedicated. She puts a great emphasis on education, where it be her own or that of the children of the slums. This factor demonstrates not just her scholarly nature, but her dedication to this art in that she perseveres even when it is trying for her. Manju can be described as virtuous due to her kindly nature towards the children both in educating them and looking out for their well being (namely Devo, who was being beaten by his mother in her hut). Furthermore, she is shown to have distate for dishonesty and misdeeds of her mother, even though they are what provides her better (compared to the others of Annawadi) living conditions. Manju is a person I would love to see succeed in her endeavors, as I see her most definitely as wonderful in her ways. Though she lives in such poor conditions, she seems to be making the best of it while also making attempts to give back to the community while she takes care of her own self. I find her to be someone admirable in her spirit.
