Feb 5, 2013 (Pages 1-50) Response

Katherine Boo has a very unique way of portraying culture in her writing. She allows the reader to grasp culture in a way that doesn’t strictly state facts, but tells a story of real life people by painting a picture. I learned that describing culture in writing does not have to be limited in any way. It can be written as a narrative in which the characters are individuality described through their emotions, thoughts, and unique actions.
In chapter 2, Boo dedicates an entire chapter to illustrating the essence of Asha’s personality. Boo opens up a personal window, which showcases Asha’s ambitions and desires in life. This allows Boo’s writing to be intriguing to read. Pages 21 through 23 clearly show Asha’s true colors as she interacts with individuals in the slums. Katherine Boo was able to transform her interviews into very clear snapshots of the Mumbai people. In general, reading Boo’s work has opened up my desire to step out of the box when writing about factual information. It is much more interesting and effective when language used in writing creates a connection for the readers.  Not only that, but Katherine Boo’s use of Indian words and slang also gave me an insight into the culture that I would not have gotten if they were not included in the first place.
