pages 1-50 response

Boo weaves a story about the lives of these people instead of presenting us with dry, useless facts.  She recreates the experience so that we can hear the characters' thoughts and understand their motivations, and by understanding them a little more fully, we are able to connect with them on some level.  She doesn't victimize the people.  From students who are unable to study for their final exams because there's too much noise across the street, to the politics of "leaders" who use the poor for their own personal gain, Boo paints a very real picture of our fellow humans.
